1. God comforts us in our suffering so that we might be able to comfort others in their suffering (1:4–9a).

     "We want to avoid suffering, death, sin, ashes. But we live in aworld crushed and broken and torn, a world God Himself visited
to redeem. We receive his poured-out life, and being allowed the high privilege of suffering with Him, may then pour ourselves out for others." (Elisabeth Elliot )

2. Our suffering helps us learn not to trust in ourselves but to trust in God (1:9b)

     Proverbs 3:5–6

     "When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the
engineer." (Corrie Ten Boom)

3. God allows us to go through the furnace of suffering in order that we might learn to give thanks in all things (1:10–11)
